My teacher defined erosion as the washing away of the top soil, I define bleaching as the washing away of the top skin.
The skin is the natural signature of anybody. It is what presents you but do not define you. The skin can be very fair, fair, white, chocolate, brown black, indigo according to one’s race and traits. Skin colours can also emanate from races. Mongoloid, Caucasoid or negroid.
Bleaching of the skin especially among African began from the days of colonization when Africans unconsciously became confused about who they are or what they are. Relaxers for hair to straighten dark curly, kinky hairs were preferred and also creams that could make one become white like the colonizers. Ignorance granted, that was a no brainer! Since then, creams that are written “easy tone” “light toning” “fair and white” “skin lightening lotion” has been stable in the market. In fact people say the creams don’t bleach, they bring out your colour. Such ambiguous remarks. One should ask, “What is my original colour? That the cream is supposed to bring out.”
A friend of mine headed out to buy a cream, befitting of her black skin and she was told that “Actually, cream for dark people are scarce. What we sell are creams for fair people.” She eventually found cocoa butter cream somewhere.
Bleaching the skin is causing many problems in Africa, from skin diseases, evil looking stretch marks, patches of different colours on the skin to skin cancer. Most persons have died out of skin cancer yet people are still in for buying toning creams. What makes it more emotional is that most of them do not know that the cream they have innocently purchased in the market is having a sunshine effect on them. Men, women, children, boys and girls appear fairer and more awkward than they were and deeply looking at them, it does not make sense or beauty.
While most persons make the choice of lightening their skin or bleaching it, some ignorantly do it. Thus, people have to be careful on the kind of cream they buy. If one is confused, one can stick to vaseline, coconut oil, cocoa butter, honey creams. Also make enquiries about creams that won’t create any lightening effect or if so, it should be at a lower rate.
